If you own or operate a Bobcat S650, changing the engine oil and filter is one of the simplest ways to prevent expensive downtime. Oil service is not complicated, but it does need to be done correctly. Low oil, dirty and contaminated oil, the wrong oil, or an old filter can shorten engine life and turn a routine maintenance job into a repair bill.
For the Bobcat S650, the service schedule calls for engine oil and filter replacement at the first 50 hours, then the service schedule either every 100 hours under severe operating conditions, or every 500 hours or 12 months under regular scheduled maintenance. If your machine works in dust, mud, cold starts, heavy attachment use, or long idle periods, treat it like a severe-duty machine.

Bobcat S650 Engine Oil Capacity
The Bobcat S650 engine oil and filter change capacity is 11.4 L. Do not pour in the full amount without checking. Add oil carefully, check the dipstick, run the engine briefly, inspect for leaks, shut the engine off, wait a few minutes, and recheck the oil level.
Overfilling is not harmless. Too much oil can cause foaming, leaks, crankcase pressure issues, and possible engine damage. Underfilling is worse. The dipstick is the final check.
Difficulty, Time & Tools
Difficulty: Beginner to intermediate
Estimated time: 45–90 minutes
Best for: Routine scheduled maintenance
Tools/supplies needed: Drain pan, filter wrench, hand tools, clean rags, gloves, eye protection, correct engine oil, correct Bobcat oil filter
If you are already servicing the oil, ask Chinook Equipment whether your fuel filter, air filters, hydraulic charge filter, breather cap, or grease points are due at the same machine hours.
Before You Start
Park the loader on level ground. Lower the lift arms. Place the attachment flat on the ground. Stop the engine, remove the key, and allow hot components to cool. Clean around the oil fill, dipstick, filter base, and drain area before opening anything.
Do not service the machine with the engine running unless the official procedure specifically requires it. Keep clothing, tools, hands, and jewelry away from moving parts and hot components. Clean up spilled oil immediately.
Step-by-Step Bobcat S650 Oil Change
- Warm the engine
Run the machine long enough to warm the engine oil, then shut it off. Warm oil drains more completely and carries more contamination out with it.
- Access the drain hose
Open the rear service area and locate the engine oil drain hose. Route the hose into a drain pan large enough to hold more than 12L.
- Drain the oil
Remove the drain cap and allow the engine oil to drain fully. Do not rush this step. Once the oil has drained, reinstall and tighten the drain cap, then return the drain hose to its proper storage position.
- Remove the old oil filter
Use a filter wrench if needed. Check that the old gasket comes off with the old filter. A doubled gasket can cause a major leak after startup.
- Install the new filter
Clean the filter base. Apply clean oil to the new filter gasket. Install the filter by hand. Do not cross-thread it. Do not crush it with a wrench.
Need a genuine Bobcat S650 oil filter?
- Refill the engine
Add the correct engine oil through the fill opening. Start with slightly less than full capacity, then check the dipstick and bring the level up carefully.
- Start, inspect, and recheck
Start the engine and let it run briefly. Shut it off and inspect around the filter and drain cap for leaks. Wait a few minutes, then recheck the dipstick and top up if needed.
Common Problems After an Oil Change
| Symptom | Possible Cause | Next Step |
| Oil leak at filter | Loose filter, doubled gasket, dirty sealing surface | Shut down and correct immediately |
| Oil pressure warning | Low oil, wrong filter, oil system issue | Shut down immediately and inspect |
| Oil level too high | Overfilled crankcase | Drain excess oil and recheck |
| Milky oil | Possible coolant contamination | Stop running and book service |
| Fuel smell in oil | Possible fuel dilution | Stop running and book service |

When This Is Not a DIY Job
Do not keep running the S650 if you see an oil pressure warning, repeated oil leaks, milky oil, fuel-contaminated oil, metallic debris in oil, or an engine noise that appeared after service. At that point, the risk has moved beyond routine maintenance.
If your Bobcat S650 has an oil warning, leak, contamination concern, or unknown service history, book service with Chinook Equipment. A proper inspection is cheaper than running the engine until it fails.
